Hey Guys,
I completed my engineering in Information Technology at the University of Mumbai. Well like most people, engineering wasn't my first choice either, but that topic is for another day. I learned a lot during my four years of engineering, but most of those lessons weren't about engineering. Even though it wasn't my first choice, looking back, I can't think of any other place where I would rather be.
Lets now jump into my journey of engineering:
1. Grass is always greener on other side
I received an admit from a college located in the city of dreams, none other than 'Aamchi Mumbai'. A city 10 times as big and approximately 350 Kms from my hometown. While I was quite excited about moving to a new city and living away from my parents, little did I know that homesickness was gonna hit me like a truck.
Only a month had passed when homesickness hit me because this was the first time I had been away from home for this long. I was fortunate to have a roommate who was a childhood friend, so it got a little easy. Even though I was in Mumbai, which arguably is the best city to be in, in India. I missed the subtle things about my hometown, even the things I thought I didn’t love earlier. And now when I go back to my home town, I miss Mumbai too. This made me realize it's important to appreciate what you have right now, I am not saying don't change your circumstances, but sometimes take a moment to appreciate what you have right now. Otherwise, you will spend your life thinking the grass is greener on the other side.
2. Figuring out real among the fake
It was this time when I realized, I should be having a few but worthy friends who will not only teach me to get high but uplift me when I am going through a rough patch. But during the initial semester of my college, I was trying to be friends with some people considered as studious and attentive. It was soon enough I understood that these people won't stand by my side if I hit rock bottom. Then happened the first bunk of my engineering college which also turned out to be one of the most expensive ones. Ever since my attendance kept falling and by the end I had only 10% attendance but a bucket filled with memories.
I would like to share another incident with you guys; everyone needs a job when you pass out as an engineer. We had a company visit our college which was conducting GD. A person in my group wanted to get into the company, so we filled all the available slots in his group for GD, after entering the room we all except the guy didn't utter a word to make him pass the round.
Guys, if you are reading this, and I know you are I would like all of us to gather once again and have a 'Bhand Party' again.
With wrong friends during the course, your life gets miserable but with the right ones, I guarantee these would be the best years of your lifetime. It's best to figure out the real ones among the fake.
3. YouTube is your best teacher
It was Exam time, even before I realized as I was busy bunking and my attendance had fallen tremendously. I did not know shit about the subject that was being taught. It was then I discovered a superpower right at my fingertips, guess what?
The answer is YouTube. Yes, it is not only meant to entertain us but a few of the creators help us pass engineering. It has been by my side throughout my engineering and helped me learn my syllabus in a day or two's time. It has not only helped me become an engineer but has also helped many other engineers. It has taught me more than my college faculties have, due to the lack of my presence in the classroom.
Apart from this, I feel the content available on YouTube is more than enough, and more informative than the websites that provide you with certification after purchasing the course. So use it wisely, it can either be your best teacher and improve your career or be the best time pass and hamper your career.
4. Prioritize
Involving yourself in many activities and gaining exposure is as important as learning how to handle them all at the same time. You can be involved in various sports, student chapters, dating, and chilling around with friends. But you should always prioritize the tasks that are to be done.
I have done all of those with an added responsibility of managing my home as I was living away from my hometown in the city of dreams. I have taken part in organizing sports events, my college fest, and been a member of the entrepreneurship cell.
Juggling between this stuff wasn't enough for me so I dated a few girls and had more attendance in the cafeteria than my classroom, all while keeping in mind to clear engineering with a minimum of First Class (Which I did).
In the end, a piece of advice try prioritizing improvement in your skillset over your babe. The reason for the above suggestion is this will help you grab a job with a better package because you can't feed them with love you need food for that. I learned it the hard way.
I hope you learn from the mistake I committed and choose your battles wisely.
5. Start Now, Start Simple
In the pre-final year as a part of the entrepreneurship cell, I represented my college in E-Summit by IIT-Bombay. During this period a host used the phrase 'Start Now, Start Simple' which has made a direct impact in my life.
At that time the phrase didn't mean much to me, but when I started implementing it in my life it actually made a difference, and ever since then I have tried to implement it in my life.
This is something that made me start my blog. With your small simple efforts, you can make a huge change in yourself and the world.
So, be it anytime of your life you can always start something new. Also, keep in mind that being persistent in doing that job is as important as it is to start.
6. Everything has an expiry date
Not everything lasts for a lifetime. No matter how hard you try. Writing this is one of the toughest jobs, as it is an experience I don't want to relive.
As you might have guessed this is about a breakup. I was very much into this girl named Urmi, who had an amazing soul and we thought it was meant to be but we hit a major roadblock. Ever since then it is hard for me to believe in forever but again I was very lucky to have my friends around me through this tough time I was going through and bring me back.
Apart from this, the nation was declared under lockdown and my amazing engineering life came to an end just like our gully cricket, without giving us a chance to meet for one last time.
On the occasion of my last exam, I had written a short poem:
4 saal phele jo safar chalu hua
Uski aaj manzil anginat assignments aur 40 subject padh kr aa chuki h
Aakhri exam k baad wali bhand trip sabki reh gai h
Yaad aaega toh attendance k liye rona
Exam ki raat ratta marna
Aur phir KT k liye rona
yaha kissi ka dil laga toh kissi ka kat gaya
lekin aaj wohi 4 saal aakhon k samne ghumenge
kush toh sab rahenge
Lekin mann khamoshi se bhar uthega
kaash yeh 4 saal mein wapas jee sakta
Intersting !! Keep on ✍ more😊
Loved reading it. Keep writing!!
Gist of 'Engineer life'. I liked it !
